Ages: All Ages
Attire: Black tap shoes and athletic clothing
Learn About Our Levels
LEVEL 1/2 – Tap level 1/2 focuses on the foundations of tap technique. Dancers begin by learning the basic functions of the tap shoe and spend their class time practicing essential technical steps like shuffles, ball-changes, paradiddles, time steps, pull backs, and wings. Students are also introduced to basic forms of improvisation and begin to gain musicality and rhythmic familiarity.
LEVEL 3/4 – Tap level 3/4 is a beginning/intermediate class building on the skills of level 1/2. In this class, dancers focus on mastering steps learned in their first years of tap and implementing them in clear and concise ways. This level prepares dancers for an intermediate level class by requiring flawless execution of timesteps, paradiddles, pull backs, buffalo turns, and basic wings before moving levels.
LEVEL 5 – Tap level 5 is a high-level intermediate class. Students are expected to be comfortable with more complex types of wings and pull backs, and should cleanly execute riffs, drawbacks, complex timesteps, and flap turns. To build stamina for more advanced levels, students work on intensive choreography and are expected to perform choreography and combinations without assistance.
LEVEL 6 – Tap level 6 is an advanced class for experienced and dedicated dancers. The class is high energy and requires strength, agility, and familiarity with common rhythm-tap technique and tricks. Dancers constantly learn new skills in this class and are expected to confidently demonstrate new tricks to the class. Combinations and choreography taught in this level are nuanced, intricate, and expected to be picked up quickly. Dancers also begin discovering their unique improvisation style.
LEVEL 7 – Tap level 7 is a hoofing style master tap class designed for the most advanced and ambitious tap students. Students competently attempt professional-level skills, such as five-count shuffle wings, toe pick-overs, and double turning maxi fords. Students are expected to apply feedback from the instructor immediately to ensure accuracy in their performance. The class emphasizes rhythmic call-and-response improvisation, and the students get the opportunity to work on their improvisation and with professional musicians.
